Dr Akhtar Hameed Khan Memorial Trust has envisioned a 25-year progressive plan in the area of solid waste management to turn Pakistan into a responsible country having solutions in the area of solid waste management on the centenary celebrations of the country in 2047.
The plan is based on creating a national hub in collaboration with partners including different friends (institutions) and replicate best global practices in area of solid waste management in Islamabad. This will be a pilot project which will be reflective of various dynamics AHKMT has found in different areas of Pakistan.
There are also a number of benefits this national hub could have by doing waste management, such as saving the money on supplies, reducing the current waste disposal costs, and in the long term this step may avoid the environmental burden caused by producing and disposing unnecessary materials.
The AHKMT team is extremely passionate about inculcating a sense of responsibility among citizens regarding waste management. Their work in SWM also speaks of their lifelong dream.
The AHKMT has envisioned to set up a number of departments at the national hub where research and development will be carried out with the help of institutions of higher education like PirMehr Ali Shah Arid Agriculture University, Rawalpindi, Fatima Jinnah Women’s University, Rawalpindi, Kohsar University Murree and schools and work with students and youth to find latest solutions that can assist us in our needs to address solid waste management issue of Pakistan. Apart from research, a capacity building and training institute will enhance the skills of all stakeholders. AHKMT also envisions establishing a recyclable department in the national hub for treating and segregating recyclables and providing relevant raw materials to the relevant industries. Coordination and networking team will work round the clock for establishing liaison with relevant stakeholders.
A products department will be hub of product generation and responsible for their marketing and sales.
Human Resource Department and a well-trained and dedicated team will be developed to improve the overall working of the institution.
The media section will be responsible for publications, contacts with electronic and print media as well as social media content of the organization for promotional purposes.
The departments will be responsible for formation of stakeholders’ steering committee, organizing trainings for sanitary workers, private workers, communities, councilors and informal sector. The national hub will be collaborating with industry and also provide training to institutions that are working in areas of solid waste management and environment by reaching memorandum of understandings and holding meetings with the stakeholders. One of the major roles, the national hub will play will be to utilize agricultural, rural, urban, and industrial waste in an efficient and productive manner. Promotion of Kitchen gardening, will be implemented to encourage the people generate organic fruits and vegetables at the space available to them.
