Solid waste collection and disposal system The Environmental Guard (e-guard), a profit-oriented business enterprise was formed on May 9, 2009 for providing household garbage collection service to the local communities. It provided solid waste management services to local communities at affordable rates. In 2012 UN-HABITAT joined the party, and in their collaboration the waste collection system was replicated in six major cities of Pakistan. However, in 2013 the issue of proper disposal of solid waste emerged as line companies and government functionaries started raising questions of huge dumps of garbage disposed at the limited landfills in the cities where e-guard was serving. AHKMT kept on striving to address the situation and found out a successful waste addressing model already practiced in Bangladesh. The United Nations Development Industrial Organization (UNDIO), Renewable Energy & Energy Efficiency Partnership (REECP), Private Financing Advisory Network (PFAN), USAID, and National Institute of Business and Economic Frameworks (NIBEF) organized a five-day Director Training Program from July 22-26, 2024. Solid waste should be deemed as opportunity instead of crisis
Commissioner Rawalpindi vows to replicate IRRC model in Rawalpindi district Background: Municipalities in the low-income, developing countries spend a major proportion of their municipal revenues on Solid Waste Management (SWM). Yet service levels remain low while most disposals are deemed as unsafe. The situation is likely to worsen due to continuing population growth and urbanization in these countries. Like other developing countries, Pakistan too faces serious environmental problems. A large proportion of the municipal waste is either burned, dumped or buried illicitly on vacant land in many towns and even major cities, causing significant environmental damage and threatening human health. Worse, there are no SWM systems in place to deal with potentially hazardous waste; systems dealing with medical waste are particularly inadequate. Therefore solutions are needed urgently. All major cities, be it Islamabad, Lahore, Rawalpindi, Karachi, Quetta and Peshawar are facing enormous challenges in tackling the problem of urban waste.…

IRRCs
IRRC B-17, MPCHS, Islamabad In the Multi Professional Cooperative Housing Society (MPCHS), a one of its kind housing societies of the federal capital, AHKMT set up an IRRC on 5 kanal land in 2018 which was launched in 2020 catering to the needs of around 4000 households and handling the capacity of 3 tons garbage. The 5-kanal IRRC has 12 composting boxes, four maturing boxes and a proper rainwater harvesting system. A proper office for staff, storeroom, workers washrooms and parking lots for vehicles are present on the premises of the IRRC. The project has incurred a cost of Rs11 million and the construction work has been finished within a span of one and half years. Course on solid waste management to be introduced at AIOU
Islamabad: Dr Akhtar Hameed Khan Memorial Trust (AHKMT) has expressed its willingness to introduce a course on waste management in collaboration with the Department of Environmental Sciences at the Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU)’s Islamabad campus, says a press release. AHKMT CEO Sumaira Gul in her concluding remarks at the certificate distribution ceremony of a three-day training workshop on the subject held in Islamabad said that the trust has been working on solid waste and sanitation models not only in the downtrodden areas across the country. “This training workshop is an orientation session, after this, the students will be able to get training for six months at the Integrated Resource Recovery Centre (IRRC). AHKMT and Muslim Hands AJK join hands for joint ventures, trainings
Dr Akhtar Hameed Khan Memorial Trust signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Muslim Hands Azad Jammu and Kashmir on September 27, 2022 for a period of ten years.Under the agreements both sides will work in areas of solid waste management, environment and climate change relevant initiatives, research, trainings and entrepreneurships.Muslims Hands AJK and AHKMT will devise an annual action plan and make this plan of action see light of the day both sides will jointly mobilize their resources to generate funds.The two sides also agreed in principle to jointly take up initiatives like establishing Integrated Resource Recovery Centers, training of youth as entrepreneurs, research work and capacity building in area of solid waste management.AHKMT and Muslims Hands AJK also agreed to implement joint ventures for which separate agreements and detailed roles responsibilities would be charted down.
