Dr Akhtar Hameed Khan Memorial Trust was invited by Kohsar University, Murree to showcase their solid waste management model at Vice Chancellors Conference from September 29 to October 01, 2022.AHKMT organized a stall at the conference showcasing all relevant material to brief the visitors and attract them towards the solid waste management modules. PLGA Lala Musa delegations’knowledge sharing visit IRRC B-17, Mardan Engro delegation visits IRRC B-17 and MardanA delegation of EngroFoundation led by Ahmad Shayan and Ms. Shiza visited IRRC B-17 on September 21, 2022 to take the firsthand knowledge of the entire process of waste management, its segregation and compost production.They were accorded a warm welcome by AHKMT representatives and briefed about the working of the IRRC.Later the delegation visited IRRC Mardan where they were welcome by the IRRC focal person Mohammad Ishaq and briefed how the IRRC works. IRRC Bhara Kahu: A stepping stone for solid waste management efficiently, sustainably
The rapid urbanization and economic development taking place in the Asia-Pacific region is leading to increasing solid waste generation, with an estimated 1.3 billion tons of municipal solid waste generated globally per year and this figure is expected to reach 2.2 billion tons per year in 2025. Managing solid waste is one of the costliest urban services in developing countries, where local governments spend 20 to 50 per cent of their budget on solid waste management. In low-income countries like Pakistan, municipal solid waste management is the single largest budgetary expenditure, with on average 80 per cent being spent on collecting and transporting waste to the dumpsite. Despite the high-spendingon-waste management, cities are finding it increasingly difficult to collect, process and dispose of solid waste in a cost effective and environmentally friendly manner. Shelters
Providing shelters to calamity-hit localities AHKMT is providing shelter facility in Rajanpur (Punjab). AHKMT has four implementation partners in the area. Currently AHKMT is facilitating flood-hit families. Last year, the Trust provided 175 shelters to the families affected by the floods. This year it provided shelters to 100 more families, but with a new strategy. AHKMT constituted a committee in each village which is headed by D.C. The committee issueda non-profit loan to the affected families. Basically it is revolving fund. Community refunds this loan without charging any interest. The committee issues this amount to others as loan. AHKMT also built shelters for staff and sanitary workers working with IRRC Sakrand in Sindh.
