IRRC Bhara Kahu: A stepping stone for solid waste management efficiently, sustainably
The rapid urbanization and economic development taking place in the Asia-Pacific region is leading to increasing solid waste generation, with an estimated 1.3 billion tons of municipal solid waste generated globally per year and this figure is expected to reach 2.2 billion tons per year in 2025. Managing solid waste is one of the costliest urban services in developing countries, where local governments spend 20 to 50 per cent of their budget on solid waste management. In low-income countries like Pakistan, municipal solid waste management is the single largest budgetary expenditure, with on average 80 per cent being spent on collecting and transporting waste to the dumpsite.
