Dr Akhtar Hameed Khan Memorial Trust CEO Sumaira Gul attended a National Plastic Action Partnership Introductory Steering Committee Meeting held at Serena Hotel, Islamabad on October 13, 2022. The meeting was hosted by the Ministry of Climate Change, Government of Pakistan, in association with the World Economic Forum (WEF) under the Global Plastic Action Partnership (GPAP) initiative of the WEF. The meeting was annexed with the regional initiative of Plastic Free Rivers and Seas for South Asia (PLEASE) consultative workshop
The purpose and brief agenda of the steering committee meeting was to present plastic waste management baseline and commitments of the major stakeholder\u2019s \/ committee members especially from private sector and development sector. The steering committee meetings provided an opportunity to steer the plastic waste management issues in conjunction with all the major stakeholders (public sector, private sector, development sector, civil society and academia).
Speaking on the occasion Federal Minister for Climate Change Senator Sherry Rahman called for urgent need for creation of incentives for end user of single-use plastics.
She called upon stakeholders from across the country and abroad on strengthening innovation and coordination of circular economy solution to plastic pollution flowing through Pakistan\u2019s rivers mainly the Indus River.
The federal minister said that people were ingesting micro-plastics everyday through consumption of seafood, making it a crisis of our own creation that impacts our nutrition through plastic pollution.
Sherry called for an urgent need for creating incentives for the end users of single-use plastics in the society, as plastic pollution is one of the most significant barriers towards the on-going and future environmental interventions.
The Federal Minister, while highlighting the urgency of the matter, said that \u201cPakistan is facing the largest climate event of the century as there is no example in living memory of 33 million people affected by a single catastrophe. While the country adapts to a very uncertain, contingent, and unpredictable future, plastics are going to complicate our adaptation process and will hurtle us towards a 3\u00b0C world.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr. Muqeet and Ms. Marium from WEF contacted AHKMT CEO Sumaira Gul for holding a meeting over National Plastic Action Plan.
During the meeting the two sides discussed National Plastic Action Plan which will be led by Ministry of Climate Change. Engro Polymer Foundation is also the member of the plan. However, the WEF team expressed the eagerness to include AHKMT in the plan and a few days later, a Steering Committee was formulated and AHKMT was made part of the steering committee.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
