The urban poor live illegally in areas deemed unfit for habitation. Without permission to live on the land, they have no access to government support for sanitation or health care programs. These conditions do not only affect the people who live in them; their effects influence the rest of the city as well.
In collaboration with local community, from 2000 to 2009 AHKMT worked in addressing liquid waste problem and laying down sewerage lines in various streets in Dhoke Hassu, Dhoke Ratta, Dhoke Mangtal, Dhoke Ali Akbar, Iqbal Town, Dhoke Sayyedan Habib Colony, Nawab Colony, Fuji Colony, Bilal Colony and Dhoke Kala Khan with the help of RTI, Water Aid, local people and other organizations in Rawalpindi. All these areas where the sewerage lines were laid down had majority of low income people as most of these areas are developed without planning
The areas had different issues regarding water sanitation including lack of Government interest to work in small towns having low income population. They also lacked awareness about their rights and they everything will be done by the government at its own. AHKMT played its part in creating awareness among the locals about their rights and how the system works.
AHKMT also worked on the technical aspects of the laying down sanitation lines besides levelling and correcting the slope of the line. The areas had no secondary lines and the distance was quite huge for the final disposal of the sewerage so these aspects were corrected and manholes were built and open drains were covered.
The secret behind the mystery of the cleaner cities is the discipline that is installed in the minds of the people from an early age that helps maintain cleanliness in a city.

 Adopting and Executing OPP Sanitation Model:

AHKMT replicated Orangi Pilot Project (OPP-RTI) Karachi’s sanitation model in which sewerage is divided into two main parts — primary and secondary lines. The local community shares 100% cost in construction of primary sewerage lines. AHKMT hands downs free technical assistance to the street dwellers like mapping, leveling and provides estimates of primary lines construction. Moreover, AHKMT mobilizes line departments to place secondary line sewerage and connect them with the primary lines constructed by community on self-help basis.

Haryali Center

As part of e-guard project the solid waste collected by e-guard was first of all segregated at Haryali Centre set up by the company in Potohar Town where Biodegradable waste comprising kitchen waste containing fruits and vegetables peals and garden waste consist of grass cuttings, leaves, twigs and branches is segregated for composting processes. Organic waste is produced and sold to farmers and nurseries.

 Replication in 6 Cities
The Haryali Centre pilot project was replicated in six cities in Mingora, Gilgit, Mansehra, Muzaffarabad, Sialkot and G-15 Islamabad. the pilot project was used to cater to the needs of 500 households and the garbage was segregated. This was a temporary solution in place of IRRC because of lack of proper land for the project. In some instances, the green waste was used as fodder for animals in Gilgit and Sialkot while in Mingora and Muzaffarabad the AHKMT tried to take to project to composting stage but the result was not achieved due to lack of space. However, in G-15 Islamabad pilot project, the green waste was in great quantity and it was found to be the final solution for addressing the issue of solid waste management.

The Akhtar Hameed Khan Memorial Association (AHKMA) formerly known as Dr Akhtar Hameed Khanmemorial Trust (AHKMT) has been registered as an association and a not-for-profit developmentorganization dedicated to enhancing sanitation, solid waste management, and community developmentsystems throughout Pakistan.
